Dmoz Submission

Dmoz project

What is DMOZ?
DMOZ is a great link site where millions of items left to be collected by more than 60,000 volunteers. Each volunteer is editor of one or more categories «n. In this category assesses the editor if a site is worth adding and put a short description.

An example:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top : World : English : Computers : Internet : Searching : Directories : Clarification : Open Directory Project (26)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Open Directory Project Belgium " - The front page of English dmoz.be. At this time is equal to dmoz.org
  • Open Directory Project UnitedStates - English version of the homepage of the Open Directory Project, links to the World / English category pages to dmoz.org.
  • About the Open Directory Project - Brief explanation about the project.

DMOZ emerged from the ideological idea to the entire Internet mapping. It had an open project where everyone could take part.

DMOZ is known under various names. So then for example the name ODP (Open Directory Project) as many names.

The name itself DMOZ ( http://www.dmoz.org ) stands for Directory Mozilla. Mozilla is a name for a browser, which is then explained by Netscape in principle the owner of DMOZ. Netscape, for example, provides hosting, servers and technical support in a limited sense. I deliberately say "in principle owner" because there is no real "owner". Anyone who loves the conditions of DMOZ, the database with data download and use for his own site

Who uses DMOZ?
As mentioned, the database with data from DMOZ by anyone who loves the conditions used. The main users of the data the search engines.

DMOZ is used by almost all modern search engines use to determine what sites are good and which sites so get a higher valuation. Other users include Google, AltaVista, Netscape, Yahoo and so on.

Apart from search engines is also used as outdated DMOZ link directory to search. The Google directory is the most important and most common example. Also just the site of DMOZ itself is widely used as a link directory to search.

Surveys of users of ODP data:

How does DMOZ?
As mentioned DMOZ works with 60,000 volunteers. There is a complete structure of main editors (the meta editors) and section editors (the editors cat = category editors). The higher your structure in sections, the more sections you manage. So for example, I manage the car section, with sections including all brand names (which are over 50 brands and thus 50 sub-categories). For example, in the section Citroƃ «n and Land Rover are also editors. If higher editor can I also add links in those sections.

DMOZ has two major problems: Not every section has its own editor and not every editor meets weekly or even monthly in his column. It can sometimes be that your site notified within 6 weeks added. It may be that without a section editor for six months or even longer is not updated.

Preparation # 1: Read the rules of DMOZ
DMOZ is very strict when it comes to where and how the sites are added. It is strongly recommended to get the " official submission instructions "to read through.

Incidentally, this article is a good addition to the rules of DMOZ. Most tips also refer to the instructions of the ODP.

Preparation # 2: Have a good site
That sounds logical, but what do editors a good site?

Lots of good content on the specific topic. Content does very well for DMOZ. Easy to make content for example is a section with links or a section with a piece of history on the subject. The lack of good content is one of the main reasons for an editor to create a site to dismiss.
Up to date. For example, add a section called "news" or "events" to. A handy trick to make a site an updated look and feel is a script on your site by adding the automatic date.
A normal load time. A good site loads simply too fast. Take the assumption that the site within 10 seconds to load.
A properly functioning navigation. How some companies do not experiment with their navigation remains a mystery to me. As an editor you get the craziest things to promote and certainly not when you add in DMOZ. Keep the navigation simple and think about what your visitor wants. The editor is in fact simply a visitor.
Links. "404 file not found" is a big letdown for an editor. The editor gets the impression that the site is not well kept and is therefore not recommended. Make sure not only your navigation works well, but also an acceptable part of the links in your link section works.
No annoying pop-up banners.
These are all no guarantees for adding a site to DMOZ, but help you very much.

Choose the appropriate DMOZ directory for logging

If DMOZ is expected from you that you have first right to search for the right category for your site to sign up. This part of the sign in DMOZ is very important because sometimes your application might be delayed for months when your site in the editing system is moved from one category to another.

You go to the homepage of dmoz.nl and choose the appropriate category:

Dmoz Submission

Your site to DMOZ
Then comes the sign itself. You right click on the text "URL":

Dmoz Example

Then ask a few things to fill in:

Title
Stick to the actual name of the site. The commercial «le headings are for example required only the business name as a title to display.
Let your title basically the same as the title on your site itself turned on.
Do not use only capital letters and characters that you avoid extra attention to the site would attract.
Mention terms like "welcome" and "free" and the editor for all kinds of unnecessary search keywords.
Usually, a bad title not just lead to a rejection of the Website. You save only the editor some time and effort if you do it right.

URL:
This section basically speaks for itself. Yet a few tips:

Do not forget http:// in front of them there (is very often forgotten!) Three times and check whether the URL is well typed. An editor would sometimes have to look to the correct address, but you'll quickly be rejected because the site still is not found.

Your site uses a redirect or a free address with a Frameset (for example when come.to / demosite or www.demosite.com), then do the actual address as http://www.home.com/example. Under the rules of ODP / DMOZ, the editor the link to the actual address.

It is also meant to give you example http://www.bedrijfsnaam.nl instead of http://www.home.com/example/index_02.html. The editor will have to change again in the main address. Do not try twice to be added to DMOZ by two other addresses just to give up. This can cause a penalty due to spamming.

Description
This is the hardest part of your application. Some tips for a good description:

Keep it very short!
Up to 30 words (already a lot!)
Preferably, a sentence, and a maximum of 2 phrases.
Write as an editor.
Make a list of the parts of your site.
Not once mention the name of the site.
Write descriptions ; English descriptions for English sites.
Avoid personal pronouns like I, we, us.
Avoid like advertising and promotional texts.

Links, news, research and several articles about logging in DMOZ.
Look especially look good in where you want to log the site. Observe how the editor of the descriptions in his class have made and try to write text in the same style.

A tip: Place the logon to DMOZ proper "description tag" on the homepage of the site. The editor receives it in its editing system to see and can then decide whether or not he takes over.

Finally, it is a good idea of the " editor guidelines "(guidelines for the editors) a good read. So you can learn what DMOZ is itself says.

www.dmoz.org / guidelines.html

Check your registration
And then comes the wait. Be patient and look every now and then in the section where the site is logged. Occasionally use the DMOZ search engine on the homepage of www.dmoz.org . A site may be covered under a completely different section than where you have registered the site added.

Dmoz Submit
How long does it add to DMOZ?
On average, it takes several months to much longer, if your site is added uberhaupt! How long it takes depends on whether a section uberhaupt an editor and how often is that editor. It is and remains a volunteer site. Average, an editor once every 6 weeks to once every 4 months. After four months not logged void because your editorship. The editor will receive a reminder email.

Some sections, however, are very well maintained. You can then just suddenly in two weeks already in it. These are, however, more than the exceptions to the rule.

Tip: What you can slow addition very strongly is the log of your site in the wrong section. If that is the case, the editor section as soon as he adjusts the site moved to the appropriate section. You then get the waiting time before the first editor logs in, and then wait until the new editor of the log section. This can sometimes amount to a delay of more than a year!

As is also true for all search engines is the motto: patience, patience, patience. Please also keep in mind that your application is rejected because your site is simply not good enough for entry. Having a good site is very important!

What you should absolutely NOT do when logging in DMOZ?
Like search engines, you can also incur a penalty DMOZ. And that's difficult because you will get there in principle, never again.

The editing system as an editor of DMOZ you can see exactly what actions to take place around a certain site. There are some things that editors and you find very annoying is an inexorable penalty could result.

What are reasons for a penalty or a direct rejection of your application:

Register your site more than once. In two different headings register your site will just go, but I know of examples of sites that had applied in 8 categories. This is against the rules of DMOZ and provides a penalty on you absolutely.
Redirects up. This is the automatic "forwarding" to another site. This is also against the rules of DMOZ. The editor will mention the need to adapt to the url to which you refer or reject your application.
Mirrors log. Mirror sites are sites that exist on a different address, but an attempt at a new address to sign up again. So the same two sites, with two different names. Definitely one death-doer for the editors.
Deep Links Register. Deep links are links to pages that are deeper in a site. So not to Homepage. Only in large exceptions, an editor places a deep link. Only if there is a very good reason.
A site that is not finished at DMOZ log "Under construction" is a direct reason for rejection. You should know how many companies sites be rejected for this reason ...
DMOZ is a directory that was created by people and not by Robots. That means you can fool them with algorithms. Is a site that is also changes over time, and other things does not show safe. The added sites are regularly checked by the editors and higher if necessary, the entry modified or removed.

Help, I'm not there in DMOZ!
For DMOZ is: patience, patience, patience. The editors have their own agenda and timing and there nothing you can do. Please note that it may take at least four months and in the meantime make sure that you get as much as possible links to your site on other sites. This ensures at least that your link popularity in the meantime you can continue to rise.

Optionally you after a month or three yet to try the site to log into another category in DMOZ. This can however only do this once! Make sure the site has grown quite a bit more and has better content. Also make sure the site meets the other requirements for recording. The chances are very high because the site was rejected because of a lack of good content.

Good luck logging in DMOZ!
